Our mission is to provide a safe haven for unwanted animals and to do our best to match those animals with potential new owners. We also want to help owners to keep the pets that they already have. Maybe you are having problems training a dog or are going through a stressful and difficult time in your life and just need some help or advice or someone to talk to. Your pet may feel like a burden, but it doesn't have to. We are here to help you with training, nutritional, behavioral and even housing problems. Sometimes the solution is simpler than you realize.

We are a non-profit, no kill animal shelter. Because sadly there are so many animals in Nelson that are lost, abandoned or surrendered, we feel there is need for such a facility. We are located next to Four Paws Only at 2124 Ymir Road, just a few minutes drive from downtown Nelson.

If you are looking for a new pet or even thinking about it some time in the near future then we encourage you to come in and talk to us about your wants and needs, we will then attempt to match you with the best animal possible to meet your requirements.

Thinking about re-homing your pet ?

Here are some suggestions that may help you find a new home for your dog or cat.

  • If you are very determined to keep your pet often there are many people that can offer assistance. Be sure to call trainers, veterinarians, and family before you decide to re-home. If you are having a problem it may be easier to solve than you think. And you may be able to keep your pet after all.
  • If you have a purebred dog/cat CALL YOUR BREEDER, a breeder should take back ANY dog/cat they have bred at ANY age. If this is not an option, look into Breed Rescue, as almost every purebred club has a breed rescue. If you are not sure how to contact them give us call or look online.* many people will find a breed rescue and think because they are in Ontario or the USA they will not be able to help them as they live in BC, but breed rescues usually have a large network of people that valunteer all over the country.
  • Call your local shelters, and see if you can post your animal with them, call your paper, (often it is free) and make posters and advertise at Veterinarian offices.
  • Make sure your pet is up to date with vaccines (if possible) and spayed and neutered. This will make it easier to find a new home.
  • Try not to wait untill the day before you leave town to call your shelter, as we are all often limited for space. If we know you are out there trying to find a home and you have two weeks we can touch base with you closer to the date to see if you will need to bring your animal in.
  • Ask questions of the new owner, how will they treat your pet. Be sure to give lots of history good and bad so the new owners know what they might expect.
  • Remember that your animal has offered you unconditional love and they DESERVE to find a loving caring home. Try to give them the best chance possible.
  • If you need to leave your animal in a Shelter, call around and find out what the differences are between the shelters in your area, you may be suprised. If you say you are coming in to relinquish a pet for adoption and change your mind PLEASE CALL as often there is another animal waiting to come in and misses out because we have held a kennel open for you.
  • Call us, we are here to help and to offer assistance. We want to help find your family pet THE RIGHT HOME THE FIRST TIME so that it doesn't have to go throught this trauma again.

Get ready for that new puppy !

  • Pour cold apple juice on the carpet in several places and walk around barefoot in the dark.
  • Wear a sock to work that has had the toes shredded by a blender.
  • Immediately upon waking, stand outside in the rain and dark saying, "Be a good puppy, go potty now - hurry up - come on, lets go!"
  • Cover all your best suits with dog hair. Dark suits must use white hair, and light suits must use dark hair. Also float some hair in your first cup of coffee in the morning.
  • Play "catch" with a wet tennis ball.
  • Run out in the snow in your bare feet to close the gate.
  • Tip over a basket of clean laundry, scatter clothing all over the floor.
  • Leave your underwear on the living room floor, because that's where the dog will drag it anyway. (Especially when you have company.)
  • Jump out of your chair shortly before the end of your favorite TV program and run to the door shouting, "No no! Do that OUTSIDE!" Miss the end of the program.
  • Put chocolate pudding on the carpet in the morning, and don't try to clean it up until you return from work that evening.
  • Gouge the leg of the dinning room table several times with a screwdriver-it's going to get chewed on anyway.
  • Take a warm and cuddly blanket out of the dryer and immediately wrap it around yourself. This is the feeling you will get when your puppy falls asleep on your lap.
